World Stages London sets slate

A new Bollywood tuner helmed by Kneehigh's Emma Rice ("Brief Encounter"), "Wah! Wah! Girls," and a stage adaptation of Jung Chang's autobiography "Wild Swans" are part of World Stages London, a May 2012 festival of eight epic international theatrical collaborations. Leading London legit addresses Battersea Arts Center, the Bush, Lyric Hammersmith, Royal Court, Sadler's Wells, Somerset House, Theater Royal Stratford East and the Young Vic will team up with 12 co-producers including Boston's American Repertory Theater and other houses from across Europe. Playwright Tanika Gupta's "Wah! Wah! Girls" is a co-production between Sadler's Wells, Theater Royal Stratford East and Kneehigh. Set against the backdrop of London's East End, it is inspired by the world of India's historic dancers and courtesans. Using classic Bollywood tracks and new music by Niraj Chag, it runs May 24-June 23 at the Peacock theater. "Wild Swans," an account of China through the heart of the 20th century, is helmed by Sacha Wares and adapted by Alexandra Wood from a book that has sold 10 million copies in 30 languages. It runs April 13-May 13 at the Young Vic in a collaboration with A.R.T. and the U.K.'s Actors Touring Company. Other productions include the world premiere of "Three Kingdoms," a drama about the European vice trade by Brit playwright Simon Stephens (May 3-19) and a new musical version of Can Themba's South African fable "The Suit" (May 21-June 16) helmed by Peter Brook.
